Day 28: Rijeka, July 29th.

Awoken at 8 by the sound of barking dogs outside on the beach. This sound never really stopped. I felt unable to cycle today and decided to take a rest day. I had to book another hostel because this one is full. This morning has been spent buying and eating snacks, showering, relaxing, cutting the uncomfortable mesh out of my shorts with my knife, and writing this. I now plan to buy a book and some bike parts and check in to my new hostel and maybe nap. Today is a day for relaxing.

I wandered into town and eventually found the shop. There was so much choice. I got a Terry Prattchet book called feet of clay because it was light in both senses of the word. I then sought some bike parts in vain. On the way however I wondered some way up a hill and saw a castle on top. I decided to go up to it and climbed a seemingly endless flight of stairs. By the top sweat streamed from me. That seems to be my perpetual state these days.

The castle wasn’t up to much but the view was nice. I got a coke and read a little of my book. A group of travellers next to me were chatting in English. I was tempted to join them, but in the end I just wondered back.

I checked into my hostel on the way. It was another HI one, like in Strasbourg and had a very corporate, school trip vibe. They also didn’t do laundry. Instead I gave that in to the old hostel. Then I went back to mine and tried to nap. I tried for 3 hours but just couldn’t sleep. Eventually, acquiring a small towel I’d found on the bathroom floor, I went to the beach. I chose the only one I hadn’t been to yet. It was very crowded. There’s only about 3 and they’re all small, rocky coves. I read for a while, then took a swim over to where some people were jumping off a concrete structure, including several topless girls. I saw a few of them that day.

After a while Jette and stein joined, then we went to the party beach, got a beer, chatted and watched the edge of the sunset (what was visible around the cliff). I dropped my things back at the hostel then we took a very crowded bus into town, (again not paying), and went to a burger place. I got a burger with brie, and between us we got a Caesar salad, truffle fries, and salchipapas. It was very good stuff, though my dessert milkshake wasn’t up to much. A while later 2 of steins dutch friends, 21 year old girls, arrived. They were young, good looking and up for partying, but I wasn’t feeling it that night. I joined the group for one drink at a GOT themed bar up the road, then walked/ran home, and went to sleep.
