Day 50: Patras to Ikaria, August 20th.

Long day. At 1:15 we headed to the taxi rank and caught one to the bus station, meaning we were there an hour early. I ate all of the mini croissants I had bought as we waited. At 2:00 Nik and Andrew arrived. We got on the bus and found ourselves towards the back, surrounded by many excitable, talkative teenage girls. Some shuffling later and Matt was next to me and the girls were all together.

I slept the entire 2.5 hour journey to Athens. We waited for 20 mins for a metro and arrived at the port at 6:00. I got a Spinach pastry, we found our boat and looked for a sofa. There were none. Nik revealed even the seats needed to be paid for. Andrew got annoyed. We took some seats anyway and hoped. No-one claimed them. I slept. When there were about 2 hours left I joined Nik outside for a while. He’d lost his jumper to the sea in a gust of wind.

We arrived in port at 14:15. We spent an anxious 30 mins trying to find our car, with multiple false hopes. Eventually it arrived. It’s alright to be honest. We took a hot and cramped 50 min drive along high hills, cliffs and through a tunnel to the hotel. It’s basic but good for the price. Me and Andrew took one room, while Nik, Miles and Matt took the other. Andrew doesn’t snore, luckily.

Soon we took a drive to nearby Seychelles beach. It was quite a trek down, and the last step involved climbing on a thin pathway around some precarious rocks. Matt would not do it, so we left him. The beach itself was super cool. There was shade from overhanging cliffs and caves. Someone had set up a drink stand selling spirits and beer from a rock. There were plenty of small rocks and bays to jump from, and the sea was warm and crystal clear. There were several topless women sunbathing, and one who was completely nude.

Andrew and I jumped off the main rock several times, relaxing with beers in between. Miles joined later and jumped off from near the top, having not managed the whole jump. After the last time Andrew and I jumped off a woman who had been swimming in the bay seemed to follow us around the headland. It was the nude girl. Andrew and I found a rock near the surface which was slippy and messed about on it for a while. The girl stood up out of the water, dived in as Andrew put it, “ass up” several times. He thought she was doing it on purpose. I don’t know.

We left the beach around 6. We found Matt waiting at the top of the path. On the way back we stopped for food. It was okay, if a little cold. When we got back to the hotel everyone except matt napped for a bit. I woke around 10pm and went and chilled outside with Matt, discussing maybe continuing my cycle. At 23:14 we woke the others for the folklore festival on the other side of the island. Andrew went quiet on the way there, and when we got there he declared himself ill.

We left him recovering on a rock as we went down to the port. It was full of people eating, drinking and dancing while linking arms and jigging in a circle. I had a few beers, a few decent pastries, and a few unsuccessful dances. It was good fun, especially the pastries. Towards the end Andrew joined. He had passed out on a rock for a while. Weirdo.

Around 3 in the morning we left, and off home to sleep.
