I woke late today – after 12. I was woken first by an endless alarm, then by Charlie’s snoring. Once up, I showered and hosed down my bike. I had a chat with a guy who was motorcycling. After that, everyone I knew had left, so I went to explore the city alone. First I went to Attaturk’s birthplace within a Turkish embassy (I’ve now been to Turkey!). It was cool enough, and free, which helps.
Then I wondered down to the white tower. I foolishly paid 6 euros to get in even though it’s free for under 25s. I look so old! The museum section was boring and all in Greek. I listened to a little of the English audio guide, then climbed to the top. The view was nice.
After that I got some vanilla cream bougatsa from a café. The guy thought I was Irish! The Bougatsa was great. After that, as it began to spit rain, I went to the war museum. It had tonnes of guns, swords and Nazi memorabilia – including a copy of Mein Kampf... The top floor was well worth seeing though – old uniforms and newspapers etc. I also bumped into some Czech guys we had met the night before and played knuckles with. Outside I saw some tanks and a plane.
On the way home I bought four Fixes (beer). Back in the hostel I met Ben – a new roommate from near Liverpool. While he smoked I drank and chatted with him. Then I met a few other people and chatted. Everyone was interested in going to a reggae event in an old amphitheatre. I invited Ben. Nicoleta showed me some magic tricks and I showed her my disappearing card one.
Later we left - me, Ben, Sarah, Nicoleta, Tun and Gust (dutch) and Oryan (Israeli). We walked to the place. Ben kindly lent me his shoes. When we got there the event had been moved 50 mins away due to bad weather. We ended up wondering into town and playing pool. I won one out of two games. We tried to go to a popping cocktail bar and were thrown out – literally in my case – for no particular reason. Instead we went back to the bar from last night and sat and chatted near the balcony again. On the way home I got a messy gyro, then off to bed.
