Day 71: Thessaloniki to Camping Asprovalta, September 10th.

Back on the bike for a relatively short day. Up at 8ish to pack and have a cuppa in the reception. Nicoleta said it felt like I was leaving too soon. That was nice to hear. I packed and had a long convo with her and the American guy about what music I should listen to on my cycle. I downloaded a billion albums. I went to a bakery and got a chicken pastry and a ham and cheese one for later. I said goodbye to everyone and left the hostel around 10:30. It was sad to leave. I liked that place. Next time I travel I’m definitely spending longer in places.

The cycling today wasn’t up to much. I spent most of morning leaving the city alongside the main road. A few dogs chased me again – but less than usual. Then the road split off from the main one and I crossed the peninsular on a relatively flat quiet road past a couple of lakes. It was pleasant enough.

Around 13:00 I stopped to eat my ham pastry by a lake and consider my next move. Due to campsite and beach quantity I decided to do a short day today and a long one tomorrow. I finished the day around 3 at a lovely huge campsite on the coast. I took my time putting up my tent, then bought a beer and crisps from the shop and headed down to the sandy beach. I did a few pull ups then went for a nice swim in the clear water with sand underfoot. Not bad.

I read and slept for a little while in the sun, drank my beer, then took a shower and changed. After that I wondered along the coast and found a pizza place where I got food, an Alpha (beer), and wrote this. It’s been a nice, easy day today. A longer one tomorrow. Each pedal takes me closer to Istanbul and (hopefully) company! Soon I’ll be home. It feels like a long time. I just hope I sleep well tonight.

I picked up a pastry, walked home through the dark of the beach, took advantage of the camp wifi for a while, then slept.
